In the United States the certificate for the Registered Respiratory Therapist is issued by the National Board for Respiratory Care after passing the NBRC-WRE and NBRC-CSE examinations. Prerequisites for eligibility to sit for the NBRC RRT examinations include having already passed the entry-level examinations for the certification of Certified Respiratory Therapist, and the NBRC-ELE, and holding at least an Associate of Science in Respiratory Care - no mean feat.
