1704 – Martini

Ah, the martini! H. L. Mencken called the Martini "the only American invention as perfect as the sonnet" and E. B. White called it "the elixir of quietude". James Bond takes his "shaken, not stirred;" Bogie believed that "if everyone in the world would take three martinis, we would have no trouble;" and one of FDR's biographers stated "Before dinner, we usually had martini cocktails made by the president's own hands." It's no mystery, then, that the martini has not only maintained its popularity, but that it's actually expanded on it. This novelty design is a perfect example: the "Green Apple Martini", aka the "appletini", has gained enormous acclaim and a certain cache. This hand-shaped piece is a cheeky and fun affair, and perhaps a note to the bartender that "Green Apple Martinis" are to be the "drink of the night." The green elixir in the glass is perfectly accented by the two bright red cherries on the toothpick, resting on the side of the glass. "Martini" is in a class (or "glass") by itself.
