1566 – King Kong
Quirky, made-to-order cakes are our favorite specialty - as is clearly evidenced by this piece. This rendering of the top several floors of the famous Empire State Building is formed by 3 tiers - two square, and one round. Windows, bricks, and observation decks are incorporated, along with the towering spire that tops it off. Completed in 1931, the Empire State Building was, for nearly 40 years, the tallest skyscraper in the world (at 103 stories/1250 feet); with its antenna spire included, it stands a total of 1,454ft (443.2m) high. Instantly identifying the New York City skyline, it was designed in the distinctive Art Deco style and has been named as one of the Seven Wonders of the Modern World by the American Society of Civil Engineers. If all that were not enough, it became uniquely famous when "King Kong", the title character in the 1933 film, climbs to the top to escape his captors but falls to his death after being attacked by airplanes. In 1983, for the 50th anniversary of the film, a huge 90-foot (27m) tall inflatable King Kong was placed on the building mast above the observation deck by artist Robert Vicino. Here, King Kong awaits the small planes that will precipitate his demise, with a boasting and challenging expression on his face. For any fan of the movie, this extraordinary design will brilliantly serve as the centerpiece of the event.
