This instantly recognizable logo was created in 1953, by Art Paul, the magazine's first art director. It first appeared on the cover of the second issue of the magazine, and has appeared on the cover for every subsequent issue. Hugh Hefner recalls "I selected a rabbit as the symbol for the magazinebecause of the humorous sexual connotation, and because he offered an image that was frisky and playful. I put him in a tuxedo to add the idea of sophistication." The jaunty rabbit was quickly a popular symbol of extroverted male culture, becoming alucrative sourceofmerchandizingrevenue for Playboy. And here it is, in all his elegance, complete with bowtie (he is always dressed for any formal occasion). "Playboy Bunny" is particularly popular for bachelor parties, as well as for birthday celebrations - and why not? Of course, most gentlemen only read the magazine "for the articles."
