1798 – Black Dragon

Dragons are legendary creatures, typically with serpentine or reptilian traits, that appear in the legends of many cultures. There are two distinct cultural traditions of dragons: the European dragon, derived from European folk traditions, and the Chinese dragon, with counterparts in Japan, Korea and other East Asian countries. The two traditions may have evolved separately, but have influenced each other to a certain extent, particularly with the cross-cultural contact of recent centuries. The English word "dragon" derives from the Greek, "dragon, serpent of huge size, water-snake." Not all dragons are black, but black dragons are, traditionally, the most powerful, fearless, and stalwart of all. This may seem, at first glance, to be an odd choice for a birthday (or any other) occasion, but it could also be construed as expressing a wish for the celebrant to attain these qualities in the coming year, and to be the master of his life. "Black Dragon" is a magical totem, bestowing on the recipient all that he desires.
