1781 – 21 Mardi Gras Style

This "Mardi Gras" themed design is as colorful as it is eclectic. This work incorporates bold primary colors, as well as the accent of black in the form of stripes and harlequinesque diamond shapes. Large plumes of red, black, yellow and white ornament the piece, as does a stylized, not-quite-mardi-grasishmask, with painted eyes of gold, and narrow green eyebrows. Add to the mix the national flag of Japan: a white rectangular flag with a large red disc (representing the sun) in the center (this flag is officially called NisshÅki ["sun-mark flag"] in Japanese, but is more commonly known as Hinomaru; and the flag of Germany: a tricolour consisting of three equal horizontal bands displaying the national colors of Germany: black, red, and gold (the flag was first adopted as the national flag of modern Germany in 1919, during the Weimar Republic), and you have quite a collection of symbols. These flags might connote the national origins of the birthday celebrant, or some other nebulous significance to the occasion. Whatever the case, "21 Mardi Gras Style" is an eye-popping and drama-filled design, that matches all the thrill and excitement of turning "21."
