1609 – The Court Jester

"The Court Jester" is an historic, albeit elusive, character. The European words used to denote him can now seem as nebulous as they are numerous, reflecting the mercurial man behind them: fool, buffoon, clown, jack-pudding. Classically, he is the figure who was allowed to utter the most dangerous truths about the king and the way he ruled, by clothing the sharp-tongued comments in a veil of humor. So another thing he might be called is "brilliant." He avoided punishment by deprecating himself, seemingly agreeing when people called him "fool", or "jack-pudding"; epithets that indicate he is brainless and/or soft-headed. Here we have a design perfect for such a personality. Equal parts comedian, and perhaps devastatingly honest, he is honored with a work that incorporates many recognizable symbols of his trade. The red, black, and white, color theme, the Harlequinesque diamond motif, the "joker" from a deck of cards; all these are hallmarks of the time-honored profession. The most important artifact was the mask, however, and this one crowns the affair, complete with small brass bells, in stunning fashion. Decorative shiny red beads and tiny roses add a touch of grace, and silver beads at the corners of the black diamonds add glitz and glitter. "The Court Jester" is indeed, a special piece, for a very special birthday celebrant.
